Art Of The Dakotas Artist

Hank Bak
Black Hawk, South Dakota
"I grew up in White River, a small community in south central South Dakota. My great grandpa taught me about whittling on pieces of diamond willow, that every piece of wood held something special inside. It was up to the carver to tell the story in the wood. Each piece of wood or rock that I work with is unique and original. At this point there are no resin copies made of any of the antler art that I have. I also have done some custom pieces for people that wanted a carving on an antler that had special meaning to them. Whether it's a bow, arrow, knife, spear, or cribbage board, each piece will be original and unique." Hank Bak - 2010
"THE EAGLE"

"THE EAGLE"
Eagle carved in deer antler with Arkansas Stone point. Base is Elk antler claw holding eagle knife.  The natural colors of the Novaculite give the knife point the eagle feather appearance. Novaculite is a hard, dense, white-to-grayish-black sedimentary rock, composed of microcrystalline quartz. It is translucent on its thin, sharp edges and usually breaks with a smooth conchoidal (shell-like) fracture. The word novaculite is derived from a Latin word meaning razor stone. This piece is just waiting for a mantle to set on. Only one available.
